You don’t wear foundation. You don’t contour. You might not even own a mascara that hasn’t dried out. So why the hell would you care about who does your makeup on your wedding day?
Because bridal makeup is a whole different ballgame, and if you want to feel like yourself (but with luminous skin and lashes that survive happy tears), you need someone who knows what they’re doing. This is your guide to finding your perfect natural bridal make-up artist.
You’re Not Trying to Be a Whole New Person
Bridal glam doesn’t mean showing up to your own wedding unrecognizable. You’re not trying to fool anyone, you just want to look amazing for the most special day of your life. Gone are the days of complete bridal transformations that shock the internet, we are in a new era. You should not feel like you’re somebody else, you will have these images FOREVER! Natural bridal make-up is all about perfectly-powdered yet luminous skin, soft tones, light and fluffy lashes and soft kissable lips.
Can We Talk About Pinterest for a Second?
Okay, I’m going to say it. I dread when a bride pulls out a Pinterest board filled with every trick Photoshop has to offer. Models that actually don’t look like that in real life, with full coverage, tons of eyeshadow and highlighter. It makes me sad because I know you’ve been up at night typing in “natural bridal makeup” and this is what they give you. If you don’t normally wear make-up, in good faith, I cannot put a full coverage foundation on you, I’m trying to go to heaven! In fact, I rarely use full coverage foundation. I’ll never forget early in my career when I assisted Madonna’s make-up artist, Sammy Mourabit, and he told me “If you learn skin, you will always have work in this industry.” Medium-coverage foundations are usually all you need, with some spot-concealing here and there. My go-to foundation for my brides is Armani Luminous Silk. THANK ME LATER.
Color Matching Is Quite Literally Everything
One word: undertone. The fastest way to feel off in your photos is foundation that doesn’t match. There is so much room for error if you choose an inexperienced artist—too warm, too pink, too light, too dark. You want an artist who pulls reference from your entire body. In most cases, I will match to the body but we can have different undertones all over our body (also why a spray tan is a must, ahem). When choosing your natural bridal make-up artist, look for photos in natural lighting and compare the chest to the face. Did they honor her olive skin tone or did they just slap on whatever was in the “medium” section of the kit and hope for the best?
